Akshaya Tritiya Akshaya Tritiya Significance why do we celebrate akshaya tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya

Four days in a year are considered one of the most auspicious days by the Hindus. Akshaya Tritiya is one of them. The other three being Ugadi, Vijayadasami and Balipaadyami. Observance of the rituals on these days assure prosperity and fortune to the believers. The day becomes especially significant when it falls on a Monday or under Rohini Star.

Akshaya Tritiya
falls on the third day of the bright half of the lunar month of Vaisakha as per the Hindu calendar. The Sun as well as the Moon are at their brightest on this day. Astrogically, the Sun and Moon are at their most exalted positions. Akshaya Tritiya is also known as Navanna Parvam.

Akshaya Tritiya is a combination of two words. Akshaya meaning undiminishing, and Tritiya meaning the third day.

Akshaya Tritiya is considered the birth date of Hindu sage Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of the Lord Vishnu and is celebrated as Parasurama Jayanti. The puranas elucidate how sage Parasurama reclaimed land from the sea. The day is also significant in that the Badri Kedar Yatra or the Char Dham Yatra for pilgrimage opens on the Akshaya Tritiya.

The treta yuga began on this day as per the Hindu mythology. According to the legend the most holy and sacred river of India, The Ganges descended on to this earth from the heaven on Akshaya Tritiya.
People celebrate Akshaya Tritiya by fasting and worshipping Lord Vasudeva with grains of rice. Many devotees perform the Kubera Lakshmi puja, which is conducted only on this day only. The idol of Goddess Lakshmi and the Sudarsana Kubera Yantra are used in the puja. The puja commences in the morning and ends in the evening. From the following day onwards the puja has to be performed regularly for 108 times by reciting the moola mantra. Usually the moola mantra chanted during the puja is as follows:Kubera Twam Danadeesam Gruha Te Kamala Sithta Tam Devem Prehayasu Twam Madgruhe te Namo Namah or by simply chanting Om Namo Bhagavte Vasudevaha.

It is believed that any activity that is started on this day is bound to succeed. The day is regarded as auspicious in every form. Any activity on this day can be started without the requirement of a muhurtam. Many Vedic scholars opine that weddings can be solemnized on this day at any time. It is celebrated across India irrespective religious faiths and social grouping. The day is considered particularly auspicious for buying assets like real estate, gold, silver, diamonds and other precious stones. Legend has it that even Lord Kubera, considered the richest among all, himself worships Goddess Lakshmi on this day. Many believe that the merit gained by giving gifts on this day becomes inexhaustible.

According to the scriptures, the celestial specialty of Akshaya Tritiya makes it a particularly good day for four kinds of activities. They are Yajanam (performance of auspicious activities like yagnas and homams), Yaajanam (enabling the performance of auspicious activities by others), Dhaanam (charity) and Pratigraham (acquisition and accumulation of wealth of any sort).

Till about 15 years ago, Akshaya Tritiya was observed more through yajanam, yaajanam and dhaanam. But rising economic fortunes of the past two decades have seen a definitive reduction in importance to these three activities, and a single-track focus on the pratigraham.

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is a holy day for Hindus and Jains. It is an auspicious day of the birthday of Lord Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this day Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write Mahabharata. The meaning of the word Akshaya is infinite that which never recede.

Akshay Tritiya was the day when Ganesha, the god of wisdom and obstacle removal, started writing the epic Mahabharata to Ved Vyas's dictation. This day is ruled by god Vishnu, the preserver-god in the Hindu Trinity. It is traditionally celebrated as the birthday of the Hindu sage Parashurama, the sixth Avatar (incarnation) of the god Vishnu. According to Hindu mythology, on this day the Treta Yuga began and the river Ganges, the most sacred river of India, descended to the earth from the heaven.

It was on this day that Goddess Annapoorna devi was born.Kubera received his wealth and position as custodian of wealth and property with Goddess Lakshmi on this day, by praying to Lord Shiva at Shivapuram.

The Jain religion consider Akshaya Tritiiya to be a holy and supremely auspicious day. It is associated with Lord Adinatha, also known as Rishabhadeva, first of the twenty-four Tīrthankaras. On this day people who observe the year-long alternative day fasting known as Varshi-tap finish their Tapasya by doing parana by drinking sugarcane juice.

Most jewelry stores stock in new models for this occasion with "Lakshmi-inscribed" gold coins, diamond jewelry and golden dollars with the pictures of many gods and goddesses. There are vigorous campaign conducted by banks, jewelry shops and financial institutions, thus Akshay Tritiya has gained prominence. Although modern retailers are exploiting the materialistic urge in people, there is today a very high awareness regarding Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej.
