Hyderabad is endowed with tropical wet and dry climate, with maximum temperature of 40°C and lowest temperature of 13°C and spreaded in an area of 625 Sq.km. with average rainfall of 89 cmt.
The micro climate of Hyderabad is highly suitable for growing of both temperate and tropical vegetables.
The availability of open spaces for vegetable purpose is extremely limited. However most buildings have terraces that are generally not used. These terraces receive sufficient quantity of solar energy that is ideal to sustain life and propagates its growth.
The roof tops comes to an area of 60,000 Sq.Mts. approximately. If 50% of area is converted into roof top gardens most of the health disorders can be overcome.
Vegetables play a vital role in providing vitamins, minerals to the human body.
As per the ICMR recommendations a human body on an average requires 280 gms of vegetables in the diet every day.
In the view of increasing population and cost of vegetables, non- availability of backyard space for growing vegetables and mechanical city life, it is envisaged to provide quality, pesticide residue free, fresh vegetables to the city dwellers.
The Department of Horticulture Government of Telangana introduced the scheme “ vegetable Growing In Urban Areas” under RKVY for the year 2012-13 .
Benefits of Roof Top Garden:
The joy of consuming the vegetables grown with the own hands givens immense satisfaction and satiety.
The producer gets fresh, pesticides residual free vegetables for consumption.
The producer gets fresh vegetables at cheaper rates.

Eco-friendly, pollution free environment.
Physical exercise to the city dwellers.
By growing greens an ambient temperatures will be maintained in surroundings.
Home gardening increases the availability of oxygen.
Homestead gardening modifies micro climate and thus reduces global warming.
Procedure For Implementation :
If the terrace / back yard found suitable for establishing nutritional garden then non-subsidy portion will be collected from the beneficiary as per the area selected i.e. minimum of 50 Sq.ft and maximum of 200 Sq.ft.
If it is found suitable the installation work will be commenced by the beneficiary.
Polyhouse Subsidy in Telangana State:
Establishment of Green/Polyhouses is a flagship programme in Telangana launched during 2014-15 with 75% subsidy to promote cultivation of high value vegetables and flowers. During 2016-17, the subsidy has been enhanced to 95% for SC/ST farmers.
Beneficiaries are eligible up to min. of 200 sq.mts and max. of 12000 sq. mts (3.00 acres) for polyhouses under General category and a max. of 1.00 acre under SC & ST category.
Objectives of the Scheme:
- To enhance productivity and yields per unit area which in turn gives higher returns to farmers.
- Promotion of high value Horticulture crops under Poly houses.
- Year round production of Vegetable crops especially for off season production of vegetables.
Terrace Garden Subsidy in Andhra Pradesh:
The government would offer a special packet containing tarpaulin sheet, mixture of sand and fertilizers, seeds bag, neem powder and oil and farming equipment to promote rooftop farming in houses.
Terrace Garden Subsidy in Tamilnadu:
The do-it-yourself kit program has started in the cities of Chennai and Coimbatore to combat agricultural land issues. The kits are available at the Horticulture Department, Tamil Nadu.
The package has all the essentials for rooftop farming including:
Six sealed polythene grow bags
2kg coco peat per bag
Azospirillum 200g
Phosphobacteria 200g and Trichoderma viride 100g
Azadirachtin 100ml
Pseudomonas fluorescens 100g
1 kg of 18:18:18 (urea, superphosphate with SOP)
Polythene spreading sheets
1-liter hand sprayer
Trowel and digging fork
DIY manual booklet
One farmer can buy five kits. The package can be obtained by providing a copy of your Ration Card or any other government ID that verifies your address and a colored photograph.
Eligibility Criteria:
The kits provided cost around 522 rupees per bag.
After the application of government subsidy, these kits cost around 200 rupees per kit. So about 50% subsidy is given by the government.
