  24 students from an engineering college in Hyderabad are feared to have been washed away in the Beas river near Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Six of them are girls.

The incident occurred at around 6:30 pm when the students, who were on their way to Manali for an excursion, were clicking pictures on the banks of the river. They are feared to have been swept away by the gushing waters of the river as the discharge of water suddenly increased following its release from the reservoir of the 126 MW Larji hydropower project.

Angry locals blocked the Manali-Kiratpur Highway after the incident.

A massive search operation has been launched to trace the missing students.

The students are from V.N.R. Vignan Jyothi Engineering College in Hyderabad.

New Delhi: At least 20 Engineering students from Hyderabad were feared washed away by the Beas river near Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, officials said.


The students, reportedly from Hyderabad's VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology, were swept away after a flash flood occurred in the river, said reports.

The students who had entered the river were caught off-guard as water was suddenly released into the river from Laarji Hydropower Project.

DGP Himachal Pradesh confirmed the incident to news channels, adding that search and rescue operations were on.

The mishap has forced authorities to close the Kullu-Manali Highway.

Some 24 students from a college in Hyderabad have been swept away by a sudden surge of water in Himachal Pradesh, officials say.
A search is on for the missing students following the surge of the Beas river in the Kullu valley.
One state official said the surge was a result of water being released from an upstream dam.
The students had reportedly left a bus to take photographs when the surge occurred.
The incident took place some 200km (125 miles) from the state capital, Shimla.
The BBC's Baldev Chauhan in Shimla says angry locals and tourists have blocked traffic on the busy road, asking why there was no warning before the dam released the water.
Himachal Transport Minister G S Bali said: "Rescue teams are looking downstream for the missing in the dark. They are engineering students of the VNR college, Hyderabad.
"The students had got off the bus to take photographs at the edge of the river at around 1930 when the sudden rise of the water washed them away."
Rakesh Kanwar, a senior state government official, said: "The water was released by the Larji power project dam."

Shimla, June 8 (IANS) At least 24 students of an engineering college in Hyderabad were reported missing Sunday after strong currents in the mighty Beas river in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district washed them away, an official said.
The students - from V.N.R. Vignan Jyothi Engineering College - were on an excursion and were getting themselves photographed on the banks of the river when they were reportedly washed away as the flow in the river suddenly increased, Mandi Deputy Commissioner Devesh Kumar told IANS.
A rescue operation was on but no body had yet been fished out. The incident occurred around 7 p.m.
