Narendra Modi Biography About Narendra Modi Facts about Narendra Modi

About Narendra Modi

Narendra Damodardas Modi  born 17 September 1950) is an Indian politician and is the incumbent and 14th Chief Minister of the state of Gujarat. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the 2014 Indian general elections and is set to be the next (15th) Prime Minister of India.

Modi was a key strategist for the BJP in the successful 1995 and 1998 Gujarat state election campaigns, and was a major campaign figure in the 2009 general elections, eventually won by the Indian National Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). He first became chief minister of Gujarat in October 2001 after the resignation of his predecessor, Keshubhai Patel, and following the defeat of BJP in the by-elections. In July 2007, he became the longest-serving Chief Minister in Gujarat's history, at which point he had been in power for 2,063 days continuously. He is currently serving his fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister. Modi is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and is described as a Hindu nationalist by media, scholars and himself. He is a controversial figure both within India and internationally as his administration has been criticised for the incidents surrounding the 2002 Gujarat riots. He has been praised for his economic policies, which are credited with creating an environment for a high rate of economic growth in Gujarat. However, his administration has also been criticised for failing to make a significant positive impact upon the human development of the state.

Early life and education
Modi was born on 17 September 1950 to a family of grocers belonging to the backward Ghanchi-Teli (oil-presser) community, in Vadnagar in Mehsana district of what was then Bombay Presidency (present-day Gujarat), India. He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife, Heeraben. He helped his father sell tea at Vadnagar railway station when a child and as a teenager he ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus. He completed his schooling in Vadnagar, where a teacher described him as being an average student, but a keen debater who had an interest in theatre. That interest has influenced how he now projects himself in politics.

Modi's parents arranged his marriage as a child, in keeping with the traditions of the Ghanchi caste. He was engaged at the age of 13 to Jashodaben Chimanlal and the couple were married by the time he was 18. They spent very little time together and were soon estranged because Modi decided to pursue an itinerant life. However as per Modi's biographer Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, the marriage was never consummated. Having remained silent on the question of marriage in four previous election campaigns, and having claimed that his status as a single person meant that he had no reason to be corrupt, Modi acknowledged Jashodaben as his legal spouse when filling in his nomination form for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Little is known of the two years that Modi spent travelling, probably in the Himalayas, and he resumed selling tea upon his return. He then worked in the staff canteen of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation until he became a full–time pracharak (propagandist) of the RSS in 1970. He had been involved with the RSS as a volunteer from the age of eight and had come into contact with Vasant Gajendragadkar and Nathalal Jaghda, leaders of the Jan Sangh who later founded the BJP's Gujarat state unit. After Modi had received some RSS training in Nagpur, which was a prerequisite for taking up an official position in the Sangh Parivar, he was given charge of Sangh's student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, in Gujarat. Modi organised agitations and covert distribution of Sangh's pamphlets during the Emergency. Modi graduated with an extramural degree through Distance Education in political science from Delhi University. Modi remained a pracharak in the RSS while he completed his Master's degree in political science from Gujarat University.

Narendra Modi
biography of narendra modi

Modi formally joined the RSS after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. In 1975, the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency and jailed political opponents. Modi went underground in Gujarat, occasionally disguised, and printed and sent booklets against the central government to Delhi. He also participated in the movement against the Emergency under Jayaprakash Narayan. The RSS assigned Modi to the BJP in 1985. While Shankarsingh Vaghela and Keshubhai Patel were the established names in the Gujarat BJP at that time, Modi rose to prominence after organising Murli Manohar Joshi's Kanyakumari-Srinagar Ekta yatra (Journey for Unity) in 1991. In 1988, Modi was elected as organizing secretary of BJP's Gujarat unit, marking his formal entry into mainstream politics. As secretary, his electoral strategy was central to BJP's victory in the 1995 state elections. In November 1995, Modi was elected National Secretary of BJP and was transferred to New Delhi where he was assigned responsibility for the party's activities in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Vaghela defected from the BJP after he lost the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, having previously threatened to do so in 1995. Modi was promoted to the post of General Secretary(Organisation) of the BJP in May 1998. While on the selection committee for the 1998 assembly elections in Gujarat, Modi favoured supporters of Patel over those loyal to Vaghela, in an attempt to put an end to the factional divisions within the party. His strategies were credited as being key to winning the 1998 elections.

In 2001, Keshubhai Patel's health was failing, and the BJP had lost seats in the by-elections. Allegations of abuse of power, corruption and poor administration were being made, and Patel's standing had been damaged by his administration's handling of the Bhuj Earthquake of 2001.As a result, the BJP's national leadership sought a new candidate for the office of chief minister, and Modi, who had aired his misgivings about Patel's administration, was chosen as a replacement. L. K. Advani, a senior leader of the BJP, did not want to ostracise Patel and was worried about Modi's lack of experience in governance. Modi declined an offer to be Patel's deputy chief minister, informing Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee that he was "going to be fully responsible for Gujarat or not at all", and on 7 October 2001, Modi was appointed the Chief Minister of Gujarat, with the responsibility of preparing the BJP for elections in December 2002. As Chief Minister, Modi's ideas of governance revolved around privatisation and small government, which stood at odds with what political commentator Aditi Phadnis has described as the "anti-privatisation, anti-globalisation position" of the RSS.

Modi is a vegetarian. He has a frugal lifestyle with a personal staff of three. He is a workaholic and an introvert. He writes poems in Gujarati. As a speaker, he is known as a crowd-puller. He wears "business suits to business meetings, instead of homespun tunics. He still lampoons the urban, English-speaking elite, but he is also honing his English skills." Modi has been labelled by the media and some articles in peer-reviewed journals as a controversial, polarising, and divisive figure, but British economist Jim O'Neill, author of the BRIC report, wrote on his blog that Modi is "good on economics", one of the things that "India desperately needs in a leader". In August 2013, financial analyst Chris Wood, chief strategist of CLSA, wrote in his weekly Greed & Fear that "the Indian stock market's greatest hope is the emergence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate.

Facts about Narendra Modi
The biggest mystery of Narendra Modi’s life was his relationship status. The world knew him as a ‘bachelor’ till the time he declared himself as married in his election affidavit . A magazine published a story in 2009 that claimed Jashodaben to be Modi’s wife. The fact that Modi never contested the facts of the story gave credence to the content of the article. Modi's wife is a retired school teacher and lives in Rajosana village of Banaskantha district. She is said to got married with Modi when she was 18. She had studied up to class VIII only and that is supposed to have spoiled their relationship. It is said that Jashodaben does not like to be photographed as she believes she is not good looking. Not only this, she is conscious of Modi’s high position and does not want to create any embarrassment to Modi although she is hopeful that someday Modi will come to her and publicly accept her as his wife. In 2014 elections the media covered when she went out and cast her vote.

Narendra Modi is a patriot since childhood. During Indo-Pak war of 1965, Modi, as a 15 year old boy, volunteered to serve the soldiers in transit at the railway stations. Similarly, in 1967 at an age of 17 years, he served the flood affected people of Gujarat.

Modi was born in an OBC family of grocers in Vadnagar of Gujarat. Modi wanted to become a sanyasi when he was a child. In fact, he was always fascinated with Sadhus, different forms of worship and meditation. He ran away from home after completing his school education. He visited many places including Ramkrishna Ashram of Belur in West Bengal. Finally, he reached Himalayas and wandered aimlessly and stayed with unknown but yogic Sadhus for months.

After returning from Himalayas, Modi ran a tea stall with his brother at the State Transport Office in Ahmedabad. Modi sold tea for many years. That was the time when Modi learnt what hardship really meant. It made him more determined and resolute in his approach towards life.
Narendra Modi is very particular about his appearance in public. He prefers trimmed beard and hair. As for his clothes, his favourite cloth store used to be Jade Blue of Ahmedabad. He ensures that he looks elegant whenever he moves out.

Narendra Modi has done a three-month course in US on public relations and image management. This could be one reason why he has succeeded in positioning himself as one of the most affable and sought after politicians in India.

Narendra Modi adores his mother and never forgets to take her blessings whenever he undertakes any new initiative- political or otherwise. Even today he went to meet his mother after it became clear that Modi is going to be the next Prime Minister. In fact, she is his only closest relation. He has got all traditional virtues of an Indian man. He is a teetotaler. He doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke. He is a complete vegetarian. In nut-shell, he is miles away from even minor vices
Women all over India and cutting over age bracket adore Modi. In his home state, he is seen as a sex symbol among women. A close look at his public meetings makes it abundantly clear that women outnumber men among attendees. Analysts say this is mainly because of his emperor like image exuding absolute power and authority.

Modi is a prolific writer and poet.He writes in Gujarati language and his favourite topics include life and teachings of Hindutva icons. Narendra Modi is a big fan of Swami Vivekananda. His most recent election campaign was christened as ‘Vivekanand Yuva Vikas Yatra’.

Narendra Modi sleeps only three hours. He is a workaholic. As CM of Gujarat, he reports to his office around 7 in the morning and works as late as 10 or even late in the night.

Narendra Modi Historic election win

Narendra Modi Historic election win

Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be the next prime minister of India, with counting trends showing the pro-business Hindu nationalist and his party headed for the most resounding election victory the country has seen in 30 years.

Modi's landslide was welcomed with a thundering rally on stock markets and raucous celebrations at offices across the country of his BJP, where supporters danced, exploded fireworks and handed out sweets.

The BJP looked certain of a parliamentary majority, giving the 63-year-old former tea-seller ample room to advance economic reforms which were started 23 years ago by current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but stalled in recent years.

Singh's Congress party suffered its worst ever wipeout, a big boost to Modi's goal of ending the dominance of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has governed for most of the 67 years of independent India.

Singh congratulated Modi on Friday with a telephone call.

Crowds surged around Modi's car after he visited his mother's home in Gujarat. He sent a message saying "India has won," that instantly set a record as the country's most retweeted Twitter post.

"I'm so happy because all of India wanted a strong government," shouted software engineer Vinod Rai at the BJP's Delhi headquarters. Rai echoed the sentiments of millions of Indians who bought into Modi's promises of job creation and economic growth to satisfy a bulging youth population.

With more than six times the seats of its closest rival, Modi's is the most decisive mandate for any leader since the 1984 assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi propelled her son to office. Since 1989, India has been governed by coalitions.

As soon as it became clear that he will be India's 15th Prime Minister, Narendra Modi visited his mother, Hiraben, at her house in Gandhinagar. After he touched his mother's feet, she blessed him by placing her hand on his head. He then tweeted a selfie of him seeking her blessings.

Narendra Modi he tweeted a selfie of him with an ink-stained finger that pushed him into a controversy - he was seen flashing the party symbol of the lotus, which the Election Commission faulted as a gesture of campaigning, which is banned on polling days.

The BJP is set to get a decisive majority, and with its allies, it will accrue more than 300 seats. It needs 272 to form the government.

Before her son visited her, Hiraben, 95, was seen praying. She told reporters, "He has my blessings and he will lead the country towards development."

Mr Modi has trounced the Congress, whose campaign was fronted by Rahul Gandhi.

Mr Modi has won both the constituencies he contested - in Vadodara in his home state of Gujarat and in holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

He has spoken in his campaign of being the son of a lower-caste tea seller and has said his mother supported the family by working in neighbouring houses. She travelled by autorickshaw to vote in the national election in Gandhinagar.

As she savoured the prospect of her brother becoming India's prime minister, Vasantiben Modi chortled at the idea that a one-time tea boy would soon be calling the shots over Delhi's traditional elite.

"They can't believe it, can't believe that someone from such a simple background could beat them," Vasantiben told news agency AFP from her modest two-storey home, close to the town in Gujarat where the siblings grew up.

"We had never imagined that he would lead the entire country one day. He left the house and the family one fine day and years and years later, look where he is now," said his sister, who lives in the town of Unjha.

KCR TRS riding on a wave, set to form the first government

KCR TRS riding on a wave, set to form the first government

KCR all set to be CM of Telangana

Riding on a wave of Telangana statehood sentiment, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) stormed ahead in the region and looks set to form the first government in Telangana which officially comes into existence on June 2. The TRS was leading in 65 of the 119 Assembly and 12 of the 17 Parliamentary constituencies.

It is basically TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao’s single-handed win. It was KCR who was quick to wrest the initiative as soon as Telangana Bill was passed on February 18 and took credit for leading Telangana agitation to its conclusions, and launched a high-pitched campaign leaving the Congress way behind.

The TRS’ campaign had no other campaigners except KCR who addressed over 300 public meetings, heli-hopping around and often addressing more than 10 meetings in a single day.

The TRS not only retained its north Telangana stronghold but also made inroads in south Telangana, a Congress bastion. TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao was leading in Medak Lok Sabha as well as Gajwal Assembly-he is contesting from both seats.

KCR’s son K T Rama Rao was leading in Sircilla in Karimnagar district while his daughter K Kavita was also leading in the Nizamabad Lok Sabha seat against Congress sitting MP Madhu Yakshi Goud.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ponnala Lakshmaih was trailing in Jangaon Assembly seat. Sitting Congress MPs Gaddam Vivekananda (Peddapalle), Ponnam Prabhakar (Karimnagar), S Jaipal Reddy (Mahbunagar-he shifted from Chevella Lok Sabha seat), S Rajaiah (Warangal), TDP MPs Ramesh Rathod (Adilabad), Nama Nageshwara Rao (Khammam) were all trailing.

BJP’s Bandaru Dattatreya was leading in Secunderabad Lok Sabha while MIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi had established a comfortable lead in Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.

In Seemandhra, a tough fight is on between Telugu Desam Party and YSRCP. The TDP was leading in 90 of the 175 Assembly and 14 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats. The YSRCP was leading in 80 Assembly and 10 Lok Sabha seats.

But with each round the equations are changing. BJP’s K Hari Babu and Y S Vijayalakshmi, mother of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, were going neck and neck in the crucial Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat. The TDP was ahead in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram in north Coastal Andhra.

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (born 17 February 1954), abbreviated KCR, is the 1st chief Minister2014- of Telengana. He is a Member of Legislative Assembly from the Medak constituency of Telangana and is the president of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.[1] He was the cabinet minister for Labour and Employment.

Rao was born on 17 February 1954 in Chintamadaka village, Medak District of Andhra Pradesh. He attained a Masters in Telugu Literature.

Congress Party

KCR started his career with the youth Congress party in Medak district, controlled by Sanjay Gandhi in the 1970s. As he himself claims, he and a few others stood by Indira Gandhi even after her defeat in the 1977 Lok Sabha polls.

Telugu Desam Party

KCR joined the TDP in 1983 and contested against A.Madan Mohan and lost that election. Kcr won four consecutive Assembly elections from Siddipet between 1985 and 1999. He also served as the deputy speaker of the Andhra Assembly. Elected as MLA from Gajwel Constituency of Medak Dist of Telangana State on 16-5-2014 with a majority of 19391.And he may be the Chief Ministerial Candidate for recently formed Telangana State in India.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi

Further information: Separate Telangana state movement

On 27 April 2001, Rao resigned as Deputy Speaker and TDP MLA. He claimed that the politicians of the region were being suppressed and believed that separatism is the only solution. In April 2001, he formed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to campaign for his separatist agenda.

In the elections of 2004, Rao won the Siddipet state assembly constituency and also the Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency, both as a TRS candidate. The TRS fought the 2004 general elections in alliance with the Indian National Congress and Rao was one of the five TRS candidates who were returned as MPs.

TRS was part of the United Progressive Alliance coalition government, led by Congress. The party later withdrew from the coalition, saying that the Alliance was not minded to support a separate Telangana state. In 2004, he fought the Lok Sabha polls and went on to become a Union Cabinet minister of Labour and Employment in the UPA-1 government at the Centre. He resigned in 2006. In 2009, Rao fought and won the Mahbubnagar Lok Sabha by election for the TRS,the party fought the general elections as part of the opposition coalition.

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao is married to Shobha and has two children. His son, K. T. Rama Rao, is a legislator; his daughter, Kalvakuntla Kavitha, is an activist. His nephew, Harish Rao, is Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Siddipet constituency.

As vice-president, Rahul Gandhi is set to lead the Congress party in the general elections in 2014. His incremental role in decision-making in the party is likely to coincide with a gradual withdrawal of president Sonia Gandhi from day-to-day party affairs. However, critics often accuse him of being reluctant to assume key role in the government.

At the AICC session in Jaipur in January, Rahul Gandhi’s invocation of the sacrifices made by the Nehru-Gandhi family drove party office bearers to tears. He asserted his authority as No. 2 in the party with a series of meetings with senior party leaders. His electoral appeal and political acumen will be tested once again as several states go to the polls.

As the scion of India's most famous dynasty, Rahul Gandhi was meant to work some much-needed family magic over the ruling Congress party.

But after a lacklustre election campaign during which he struggled to connect with voters and was outshone by his sister, he came under more fire this week for going missing at a crucial time.At a farewell dinner for outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mr Gandhi was conspicuous by his absence, generating another round of negative headlines for a man derided as a "princeling" by the country's likely next leader, Narendra Modi.

Mr Gandhi's mother, father, grandmother and great-grandfather have all led the Congress. Exit polls have indicated that support for Congress has slumped to an all-time low.

Mr Gandhi, whose mother Sonia is party president, was chosen to lead the Congress campaign despite asserting last year that the "power so many people seek is a poison". (My mother cried, she understands power is poison: Rahul Gandhi)

His appetite for power has long been questioned and he rejected several offers to enter the government. "He may be a well meaning and decent individual but as a politician he is a failure," said Kay Benedict, a Delhi-based analyst and Congress expert.

It has not helped that his younger sister Priyanka brims with the charisma Rahul is accused of lacking, a point starkly illustrated during the campaign when she emerged in the latter stages.

He has been at his most impassioned defending the secular tradition personified by his great-grandfather Jawaharal Nehru, India's first prime minister whose socialist model framed the post-independence economy.

Mr Gandhi has called the election "a clash between these two ideas of India", attacking Mr Modi over communal riots that killed more than 1,000 people - mostly Muslims - in Gujarat in 2002 after he had taken over as chief minister. (Rahul Gandhi takes on Narendra Modi over 2002 riots, questions 'clean chit')

Mr Modi, the son of a tea-seller, has in turn enjoyed riling Rahul as "shehzada" or prince who has no concept of the everyday challenges faced by India's masses, calling for an end to the "mother-son" government.

While Mr Gandhi's upbringing was as gilded as Modi's was humble, it was also seeped in tragedy.

He was 14 when his grandmother, prime minister Indira Gandhi, was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984 as revenge for the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

His father, Rajiv Gandhi, was then pressed to take over as premier. Seven years later, Rajiv was assassinated by a Tamil suicide bomber.

With Mr Gandhi studying at Harvard, it was left to his mother Sonia to pick up the mantle and lead the Congress back to power in 2004. She declined to become premier.

After office jobs in London and Mumbai, Mr Gandhi entered politics and parliament a decade ago.

But he is widely criticized for spending little time in his constituency and rarely speaking in parliament. A leaked US diplomatic cable, written in 2007, said he was "widely viewed as an empty suit".

"Rahul Gandhi was just not able to communicate, he spoke in riddles," said Mohan Guruswamy from the Centre for Policy Alternatives, a Delhi-based think-tank, as he assessed the Congress campaign.

For now, the party leadership is rallying round Mr Gandhi, arguing the result will be in effect a verdict on a government which he did not enter.

"All this discussion is absurd," said Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid when asked for his view on the exit polls. "Rahul Gandhi is our leader and he will remain our leader in good and bad times."

Asked before the election if he would take full responsibility for defeat, Mr Gandhi replied: "If we don't win, I am the VP of the party of course I will take responsibility for it."

Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi
(born 19 June 1970) is the Vice President of the Indian National Congress party and the Chairperson of the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India. Gandhi served as a General Secretary in the All India Congress Committee and represents Amethi as its Member of Parliament (MP). He is the second-ranked member of the Congress Working Committee.

Gandhi comes from the politically influential Nehru–Gandhi family. His late father, Rajiv Gandhi, had served as the Prime Minister of India and had been President of the Congress Party. His mother Sonia Gandhi is currently serving as President of the Congress. He grew up in New Delhi, where his grandmother Indira Gandhi, was serving as Prime Minister until her assassination in 1984. His father was likewise assassinated in 1991. Due to security concerns, Gandhi constantly had to shift schools in his youth. He studied abroad under a pseudonym, his identity being known only to a select few including university officials and security agencies.

After obtaining degrees in international relations and development studies at the universities of Rollins and Cambridge, Gandhi worked at the Monitor Group, a management consulting firm in London, before establishing the Mumbai-based technology outsourcing firm, Backops Services Private Ltd. In 2004, Gandhi re-entered public life; he ran for and won his father's old seat of Amethi in India's national legislature. A few years later, in 2007, Gandhi was elected as the General Secretary of the Congress party, a previously executive post held by his father, and by his great-grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru. Once described as a youth icon, Gandhi is the leader of the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India. Amidst calls from Congress party veterans for his greater involvement in party politics and national government, Gandhi was elected Congress Vice President in 2013.
Rahul Gandhi was born in Delhi on 19 June 1970, as the first of the two children of Rajiv Gandhi, who later became the Prime Minister of India, and Italian-born Sonia Gandhi, who later became President of Indian National Congress, and as the grandson of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He is also the great-grandson of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Priyanka Vadra is his younger sister and Robert Vadra is his brother-in-law. Rahul Gandhi attended St. Columba's School, Delhi before entering The Doon School in Dehradun (Uttarakhand) from 1981 to 1983. Meanwhile, his father had joined politics and became the Prime Minister on 31 October 1984 when Indira Gandhi was assassinated. Due to the security threats faced by Indira Gandhi's family from Sikh extremists, Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka were home-schooled thereafter. Rahul Gandhi joined St. Stephen's College, Delhi in 1989 for his undergraduate education but moved to Harvard University after he completed the first year examinations. In 1991, after Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE during an election rally, he shifted to Rollins College due to security concerns and completed his B.A. in 1994. During this period, he assumed the pseudonym Raul Vinci and his identity was known only to the university officials and security agencies. He further went on to obtain an M.Phil from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1995. After graduation, Rahul Gandhi worked at the Monitor Group, a management consulting firm, in London. In 2002 he was one of the directors of Mumbai-based technology outsourcing firm Backops Services Private Ltd.
In March 2004, Rahul Gandhi announced his entry into politics by announcing that he would contest the May 2004 elections, standing for his father's former constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of Parliament. The seat had been held by his mother until she transferred to the neighbouring seat of Rae Bareilly. The Congress had been doing poorly in Uttar Pradesh, holding only 10 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state at the time. At the time, this move generated surprise among political commentators, who had regarded his sister Priyanka as being the more charismatic and likely to succeed. It generated speculation that the presence of a young member of India's most famous political family would reinvigorate the Congress party's political fortunes among India's youthful population In his first interview with foreign media, Gandhi portrayed himself as a uniter of the country and condemned "divisive" politics in India, saying that he would try to reduce caste and religious tensions.

Gandhi won, retaining the family stronghold with a margin of over 100,000. Until 2006 he held no other office.

Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka managed their mother's campaign for re-election to Rae Bareilly in 2006, which was won easily with a margin greater than 400,000 votes. He was a prominent figure in the Congress campaign for the 2007 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections; Congress, however, won only 22 seats of the 403 seats with 8.53% of votes.

Gandhi was appointed General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee on 24 September 2007 in a reshuffle of the party secretariat. In the same reshuffle, he was also given charge of the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India. In 2008, senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily mentioned "Rahul-as-PM" idea when the PM of India Manmohan Singh was still abroad.

In July 2012, Union Law Minister, Salman Khurshid stated that Gandhi should provide a "new ideology" to meet the present day challenges, the Congress party was facing.

On 19 January 2013, in a party conclave of the AICC, Gandhi formally took charge as Congress Vice President. He was elevated to the post of Vice President at the party's Jaipur conclave. As vice-president, he is second only to party President and his mother Sonia Gandhi.

On 27 September 2013, Gandhi surprised everyone by openly criticizing Prime Minister of India and his government for coming out with an ordinance to undo the effect of the order passed by Hon'ble Supreme Court of India by which convicted criminals could not contest election.

His rise to the top of the Congress Party has not been without controversy. As a member of the Nehru–Gandhi family, many, such as his political opponents in the BJP and AAP see him as a symbol of dynastic politics in the Congress Party.

His recent efforts as a lawmaker have centered around anti-corruption legislation and those that provide definitive rights to specific segments of society. Gandhi has been pushing six pieces of legislation currently in draft form, namely the Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill; the Whistle Blowers Protection Bill; the Right of Citizens for Time Bound Delivery of Goods and Services and Redressal of their Grievances Bill; the Prevention of Bribery of Foreign Public Officials and Officials of Public International Organisations Bill; the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill and the Public Procurement Bill. Gandhi has pushed for women empowerment. He has backed the Women's Reservation Bill which would allow 33% reservation of all Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly seats for women. This bill passed the Rajya Sabha on 9 March 2010 but has not yet been voted on by the Lok Sabha as of February 2014.Gandhi has also backed the repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and the decriminalisation of homosexuality.

In September 2007 when he was appointed general secretary in charge of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Gandhi promised to reform youth politics. In his attempt to prove himself thus, in November 2008 Gandhi held interviews at his 12, Tughlak Lane residence in New Delhi to handpick at least 40 people who will make up the think-tank of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), an organisation that he has been keen to transform since he was appointed general secretary in September 2007. Under Gandhi, the IYC and NSUI have seen a dramatic increase in members from two lakhs to twenty five lakhs. The Indian Express wrote in 2011, "Three years later, as another organisational reshuffle is in the offing, Gandhi's dream remains unrealised with party veterans manipulating internal elections in the Youth Congress and a host of people with questionable background gaining entry into it.

Rahul Gandhi opines that the Lokpal should be made a constitutional body and it should be made accountable to the Parliament, just like the Election Commission of India. He also feels that Lokpal alone cannot root out corruption. This statement came out on 25 August 2011, on the 10th day of Anna Hazare's fast. This statement was considered as a delaying tactic by the opposition and Team Anna's members. It was consequently slammed by prominent opposition leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. The Parliamentary Standing Committee led by Abhishek Manu Singhvi tabled the Jan Lokpal Bill report in the Rajya Sabha on 9 December 2011. The report recommended the Lokpal to be made into a constitutional body. In response, Hazare attacked Rahul Gandhi, claiming he had made the bill "weak and ineffective" .

In 2004, Rahul Gandhi told the press that he had a girlfriend, Veronique Cartelli, a Spanish architect who lives in Venezuela.

Arvind Kejriwal is probably the most impressive entrant in the Indian polity in the recent past. Not only did he launch a party that depicted an identity different from that of all usual political parties, he made sure that the party went on to form a government in Delhi within months of its formation.

Kejriwal’s credibility and hard-hitting style is his party’s USP. He can draw crowds and that makes him the glue in a political party of limited organisational strength — the AAP top leadership comes from myriad ideological backgrounds and often tends to make disruptive statements.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls - the biggest carnival of democracy in the world - the BJP, riding on the back of the Narendra Modi wave, emerged as a clear winner and the ruling Congress was thrown out of power, it was none but Arvind Kejriwal’s one-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which was the biggest loser of all.

As predicted by the exit polls, AAP, which had contested on some 400 seats, fared poorly and clearly failed to impress the voters of the country. The rookie party, which had been boasting to win over a 100 seats since the beginning of the crucial General Elections could only win one seats, and that too, outside Delhi, where it had stunned the political pundits by wining 28 out of the total 70 assembly seats last year, which brought an end to 15 years of uninterrupted rule of the Congress party. The party drew a complete blank in Delhi - considered to be its strongest fort but surprisingly won some ground in Punjab.

One year back, AAP, which was an offshoot of Anna Hazare’s Jan Lokpal movement, made a spectacular political debut by defeating Congress in Delhi, its chief Arvind Kejriwal too defeated Sheila Dikshit, the three-time Chief Minister, and since then it received enormous public support and its strength grew by leaps and bounds.

Taking outside support of the Congress, which it attacked and tagged as the “most corrupt”, AAP formed the government and Kejriwal became the Chief Minister. In the beginning of its 49-day rule in Delhi, the AAP govt took some very bold decisions, which further added people’s support to the party at the ground level, but in its over-enthusiasm and due to political immaturity, the party took some very faulty decisions and got mired in controversies.

Several AAP leaders made headlines for falling on the other side of the law and Kejriwal, then a favourite politician in the national media, kept ignoring them. When it should have taken tough action against its own leaders who were defaming the party through their unmindful acts, the AAP leadership kept shielding them, Kejriwal kept himself busy in making accusations against Congress, BJP and some leading industrialist and replying to their counter accusations.

Just when all this was happening, fissures started to appear in the party and many of its founder members voiced their dissent over the autocratic functioning of their party chief and started deserting it one by one. In a very short span of time, both the national media, which had once made Kejriwal a hero in the people’s eyes, and the very aam aadmi, who the party claimed to be fighting for, got bored of AAP’s regular theatrics and the habit of seeking public mandate on every big and small issue.

As if all this was not enough, Kejriwal made the biggest political blunder of his otherwise steady going career by deciding to quit as Delhi Chief Minister for failing to get the Jan Lokpal Bill passed in the state assembly. Despite being tagged as an “escapist” and intense criticism, Kejriwal and his party decided to jump into the national election without even properly assessing its strengths and weaknesses and the possible consequences of its actions on the party’s future.

In its over-enthusiasm, the party probably failed to gauge the people’s mood and displayed and over-confidence by assuming that it would get a similar response from the country’s voters as it received during the assembly elections in Delhi. In order to bring the party into the national reckoning, the AAP leaders made blatant attacks on the Gandhi family, the Congress, the BJP and its prime ministerial nominee. The AAP's founder leader, Arvind Kejriwal even decided to fight against Narendra Modi directly in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi, stealing the limelight from Congress, which fielded Ajay Rai in the triangular battle. And working on the same tactic, the AAP fielded a delightfully articulate Kumar Viswas against Congress heavyweight Rahul Gandhi, who was involved in a bitter political fight with BJP’s Smiriti Irani in Amethi. Both Kejriwal and Viswas lost in their respective constituencies.

Ironically, in the process AAP forgot that there is a huge difference between a state’s assembly election and a national election. It forgot that a mere victory in a single election in just one state can’t guarantee your victory in the national elections. AAP failed to realize that it probably takes years for a party to establish itself among the masses and to win their hearts.

Supporters of AAP may argue that the young party’s vote share has increased even if it failed to win good number of seats but they should not forget that the success and failure of any party is also measured by the number of seats it wins and losses in any elections.

However, there is no disagreement that a young party like AAP was a no match to sufficiently funded and well established two national level parties. There is no doubt that by taking on Narendra Modi, the AAP managed to get the nation's attention to stay relevant in an uneven contest.

With no money, no muscle, AAP’s rise is a great case study for sociology and political science. Also by deciding to field 400 candidates across India, the party succeeded in laying the foundation for future electoral battles. With a virtually non-existent party, AAP has no doubt become a presence in the pan-Indian consciousness.

Throughout their elections campaign, the AAP leaders raised important issues like corruption, crony capitalism, lack of accountability in governance etc. This is probably the first time that AAP's rise has made every big party or politician sweat it out for every single vote. Through its relentless campaign, AAP has surely struck a chord with the Indian voters, though they need to start afresh, repackage itself, learn from its mistakes and stay grounded.

Though in the number game, it has failed, it would still be too early to write off or underestimate AAP or Arvind Kejriwal, who fought bravely against his maverick opponent.

Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal (born 16 August 1968) is an Indian politician and former civil servant who served as the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi from 28 December 2013 to 14 February 2014. He is the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Kejriwal is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and worked for the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as a Joint Commissioner in the Income Tax Department. He is known for his efforts to enact and implement the Right to Information Act (RTI) at the grassroots level and his role in drafting a proposed Jan Lokpal Bill.

In 2006, Kejriwal was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership recognising his involvement in a grassroots movement (Parivartan) using right-to-information legislation in a campaign against corruption. The same year, after resigning from the IRS, he donated his Magsaysay award money as a corpus fund to found the Public Cause Research Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO). In 2012, he launched the Aam Aadmi Party, and defeated Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly election. Following the election, he took office as the Chief Minister of Delhi on 28 December 2013. He resigned 49 days later, on 14 February 2014, stating he did so because of his government's inability to pass his proposed anti-corruption legislation due to a lack of support from other political parties. He contested 2014 general elections from Varanasi against Narendra Modi loosing by a margin of 64498 votes, the loss being described as a washout.

Kejriwal was born in a middle-class family in Siwani, Bhiwani district, Haryana on 16 August 1968, the first of the three children of Gobind Ram Kejriwal and Gita Devii. His father was an electrical engineer who graduated from the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, and whose work led to many changes in the family's residence. Kejriwal spent most of his childhood in north Indian towns such as Sonepat, Ghaziabad and Hisar. He was educated at Campus School in Hisar and at a Christian missionary school at Sonipat. Kejriwal graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, majoring in mechanical engineering. He joined Tata Steel in 1989 and was posted in Jamshedpur. Kejriwal resigned in 1992, having taken leave of absence in order to study for the Civil Services Examination. Kejriwal spent some time in Kolkata, at the Ramakrishna Mission in North-East India and at Nehru Yuva Kendra.

Kejriwal joined the IRS in 1995 after qualifying through the Civil Services Examination. In 2000, he was granted two years' paid leave to pursue higher education on condition that upon resuming his work he would not resign from the Service for at least three years. Failure to abide by that condition would require him to repay the salary given during the leave period. He rejoined in 2003 and worked for 18 months before taking unpaid leave for 18 months. In February 2006, he resigned from his position as a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in New Delhi. The Government of India claimed that Kejriwal had violated his original agreement by not working for three years. Kejriwal said that his 18 months of work and 18 months of unpaid absence amounted to the stipulated three year period during which he could not resign and that this was an attempt to malign him due to his involvement with Team Anna, a strand of the Indian anti-corruption movement. The dispute ran for several year until, in 2011, it was resolved when he paid his way out of the Service with the help of loans from friends.

Parivartan

Kejriwal believes in the dictum that "Change begins with small things". In December 1999, while still in service with the Income Tax Department, he helped found a movement named Parivartan (which means "change"), focused on assisting citizens in navigating income tax, electricity and food ration matters in parts of Delhi. The Parivartan organisation exposed a fake ration card scam in 2008 but, according to a founder member, did not have a great impact generally and was largely crumbling by 2012. It was for his involvement with Parivartan that Kejriwal had been given the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership in 2006. The award citation noted Parivartan and that that "the board of trustees recognizes [Kejriwal's] activating India's right-to-information movement at the grassroots, empowering New Delhi's poorest citizens to fight corruption by holding government accountable to the people."
Right to Information

Together with Manish Sisodia and Abhinandan Sekhri, Kejriwal established the Public Cause Research Foundation in December 2006, donating the prize money he had received from the Ramon Magsaysay Award as a seed fund. This new body paid the employees of Parivartan. Kejriwal has used the Right to Information Act in corruption cases in many government departments including the Income Tax Department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Public Distribution System and the Delhi Electricity Board.

Jan Lokpal Bill
Main article: Jan Lokpal Bill Kejriwal was the civil society representative member of the committee constituted by the Government of India to draft a Jan Lokpal bill, following a campaign for introduction of such legislation that featured Anna Hazare. He had been arrested along with Hazare on defying Police directive to give a written undertaking that they will not go to JP Park. He attacked the government on this and said there was a need for a debate over police power to detain and release people at will.

Political career

Kejriwal established the AAP in November 2012 as he believed that electoral politics was the next logical step in the fight against corruption. This caused a rift between him and Hazare. The party name reflects the phrase Aam Aadmi, or "common man", whose interests Kejriwal proposed to represent. He became the fifth most mentioned Indian politician on social media channels in the run-up to the Delhi legislative assembly election of 2013.
Chief Minister of Delhi

In the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections for all 70 seats, the Bhartiya Janta Party won 31 seats, followed by Aam Aadmi Party with 28 seats. Kejriwal defeated incumbent Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit of the Indian National Congress in her constituency of New Delhi by a margin of 25,864 votes.

AAP formed a minority government in the hung assembly, (claiming support for the action gauged from opinion polls) with outside support from the eight Indian National Congress MLAs, one Janta Dal MLA and one independent MLA. Kejriwal was sworn in as the second-youngest chief minister of Delhi on 28 December 2013, after Chaudhary Brahm Prakash who became chief minister at the age of 34. He was in charge of Delhi's Home Ministry, Power, Planning, Finance, Vigilance ministries.[citation needed]
Resignation

On 14 February 2014 he resigned as Chief Minister after failing to table the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Delhi Assembly. He recommended the dissolution of the Assembly. Kejriwal blamed the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party for stalling the anti-corruption legislation and linked it with the government’s decision to register a First Information Report (FIR) against industrialist Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries.
2014 national elections

Kejriwal said in January, prior to his resignation as chief minister, that he would not contest a seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Later in that month, party members persuaded him to change his mind,  and on 25 March, he agreed to contest against the BJP prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi , from Varanasi. an election he badly lost.
Personal life Kejriwal is married to Sunita, his batchmate from National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie and the National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur. The couple have two children. Kejriwal is vegetarian and has been practicing Vipassana for many years. Kejriwal is known to be averse to ceremony and does not celebrate his birthday. He has diabetes.

Live Election Results 2014 South Amma wave in Tamil Nadu KCR wins in Telangana

Live Election Results 2014 – South Amma wave in Tamil Nadu; KCR wins in Telangana

Tamil Nadu is witnessing an Amma wave, with the AIADMK leading from 37 of the 39 Lok Sabha seats. NDA partners, BJP and PMK, are leading from the other two seats. If these early trend consolidates into a victory, J Jayalalithaa’s party could even emerge as the third biggest party in the country. The DMK, in contrast, is trailing from all seats, in third position in some of them. Its strongest candidates, Dayanidhi Maran, TR Baalu and A Raja, are among those who have been trailing right from the start, indicating a tsunami against the party.

In Seemandhra, YSRCP are leading in 5 and TDP in 20. While in Telangana TRS is leading in 11. BJP leader Purandeswari is leading in Rajampet and veteran Congress leader Kishore Chandra Deo is trailing in Aruku. Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s mother Vijayamma is trailing in Visakhapatnam. TRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao and his daughter K Kavitha have won the election in Medak and Nizamabad respectively.

ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS: TDP is leading in 106 seats (Seemandhra) and TRS is leading in 60 seats in Telangana.

Basking in the glory of an expected historic victory, AIADMK general secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said the verdict was the expression of love and confidence by the people. Jaya met the press at her Poes Garden residence in the afternoon.

If these advantages are consolidated to victories, the party could emerge as the third biggest in the next Lok Sabha.

“I wish the new government and Prime Minister well, and hope that the new Centre will be friendly towards Tamil Nadu,” said Jaya, whose main campaign pitch was the establishment of a “friendly government” in which AIADMK had a role to play.

However, the value of her brilliant performance has been negated by the BJP upsurge, making support from AIADMK irrelevant for government formation at the moment.

Meanwhile, her rival M Karunanidhi of the DMK conceded defeat, and congratulated BJP and Narendra Modi for the success in elections. His party, added Karunanidhi, will continue to work for the people without being disheartened by the defeat. The party trailed in all the seats it contested – including in third position in at least a few of them.

There was no sign of any Modi wave in the State, with NDA allies coming at a poor third in most of the seats barring two. In the midst of an Amma wave in Tamil Nadu, there is an absorbing national contest at the far end of the country. At Kanyakumari constituency, BJP State president Pon Radhakrishnan is being given a tough fight by H Vasanthakumar of the Congress. As the counting progresses, the two are swapping lead while the AIADMK and DMK are trailing far behind the national parties. Dharmapuri in western Tamil Nadu is the only other seat where AIADMK is not leading — out of 39 Lok Sabha constituencies. There, PMK’s Anbumani Ramadoss looks set to win. Congress candidate Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, is running fourth in Sivaganga.

Elections 2014

Modi takes mother’s blessings before taking up PM’s post: As he appeared to be all set to become the next Prime Minister, Narendra Modi today went to meet his mother to seek her blessings.

Mr. Modi, 63, bowed down before his mother Hiraba, who blessed him by putting both his hands on him, as the trends pointed to a clear win for the saffron party in Lok Sabha polls.

“He has my blessings and he will lead the country towards development,” she said, when asked to comment on the counting trends.

The BJP Prime Ministerial candidate also sat with the family members and talked to his mother, who is staying with her other son Pankaj Modi in Gandhinagar.

He was also seen talking to the children of his brother’s family.
It is BJP’s victory; It will be the Prime Minister’s prerogative to choose who will be in his Cabinet, says Sushma Swaraj.
Arun Jaitley trails: Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, tipped to be a finance minister in a Modi government, was trailing former Punjab chief minister and Congress candidate Amarinder Singh by nearly 44,000 votes in the Amritsar seat on Friday.

Mr. Jaitley, the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal alliance candidate who is contesting his first popular election, continued to trail Amarinder from the very first round after counting began Friday.

The BJP had replaced sitting Amritsar MP, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, with Jaitley. Mr. Sidhu was elected MP from Amritsar in 2004, 2007 (by-election) and 2009.

Mr. Sidhu had differences with senior Akali leaders, especially chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Mr. Sidhu was also at loggerheads with Punjab BJP leaders who worked for his ouster from the seat.

Counting of votes begins at 989 counting centres across the country.

Counting of votes begin

Counting of votes, the grand finale in the nine-phased Lok Sabha elections, began across the country.

Election Commission said the counting exercise to be held at 989 counting centres is likely to be completed by 4 p.m. and trends will start emerging by 9.30 a.m.

By noon, a final picture could emerge on who would be the major players in the 16th Lok Sabha.

Of 989 counting centres, maximum are in Andhra Pradesh at 168 followed by 98 in West Bengal, 76 in Uttar Pradesh, 64 in Odisha, 51 in Assam and 48 in Maharashtra.

Ahead of the counting of votes, Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath had said on Fridayday that the large voter turnout was a result of “good” electoral rolls prepared by the poll authorities across the country.

He had said that “a lots of steps have been taken to ensure that those eligible to vote find their names in the electoral lists.”

The exercise to add fresh voters was carried out even days before the first phase of polling was held on April 7.

8,251 candidates, including top guns Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal were in the fray, in the largest-ever electoral exercise held in Indian history.

While national parties -- Congress, BJP, BSP, CPI, CPI (M) and NCP -- fielded a total of 1,591 candidates, the 47 state parties fielded 529 candidates. While the over 1,600 registered but unrecognised political parties fielded 2,897 candidates, 3,234 Independents were also in the fray.

The exit polls have projected that BJP will emerge as the single largest party.

The ‘ballot unit’ is switched on in the presence of senior poll officials and counting agents of candidates and the result command keyed in to get results per machine.

These were the first Lok Sabha elections when the option of ‘none of the above’ or NOTA was introduced on the EVMs following Supreme Court directions. Before NOTA button was installed on EVMs, voters had to fill up form 49 ‘O’ at the polling station which compromised their identity.

Seeking to ensure transparency, EC has deployed micro observers at all counting tables. The returning officers have been directed to provide printout of each counting round and every table to the counting agents of candidates.

Lok Sabha elections 2014 witnessed the highest-ever turnout with 66.38 per cent of an estimated 814 million voters exercising their franchise -- the highest ever in the history of general elections.
