10.45 am: Bodies of five missing students recovered from Beas river

Five students from a Hyderabad college have died and 19 are feared drowned in a flash flood in Beas in Himachal Pradesh after a hydropower plant released water without warning.

"We have recovered five bodies till now. But the volume of water is making operations a bit tough," a Sashastra Seema Bal official, part of the rescue team, said at Pandoh Dam in Mandi district.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Rai said one of the bodies was recovered from the dam, whose floodgates were closed after the accident, IANS reported.

The dam is some 15 km downstream from the accident spot.

The accident spot is located some 200 km from state capital Shimla and on the border of Kullu and Mandi districts.

The students, six of them girls, were from V.N.R. Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology in Hyderabad. They went missing after strong currents in the mighty Beas washed them away.

The chances of survival of the students were bleak, officials said.

More than 60 students and faculty members were on an excursion to the picturesque tourist resort of Manali. Some of them were getting themselves photographed on the banks of the river in Thalaut area near Hanogi Mata temple when they were washed away.

The water level suddenly increased due to release of water in the river without warning from a nearby hydropower project.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh reached the accident spot to oversee the rescue operation.

Singh ordered a probe by Divisional Commissioner Onkar Sharma into the release of water by the project authorities without a warning, said a government spokesperson.

He has ordered the suspension of erring resident engineer of the 126 MW Larji hydropower project being run by the state electricity board. A case of negligence was registered.

A team of the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), headed by Commandant Jaideep Singh, is likely to reach the spot by noon, official sources said.

The NDRF team comprises 72 people were dispatched from Delhi.

5 bodies recovered, massive search on for others

Rescue workers on Monday morning recovered five bodies from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district several hours after 26 people, most of them students, were washed away by the Beas river when engineers at Larji hydropower plant allegedly discharged water into the river without warning.

“Have recovered 5 bodies till now, the volume of water is making operation a bit tough,” Sanjeev, a senior Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) official said.

With this, the death toll in Saturday's accident has risen to five, according to Deputy Additional District Magistrate Pankaj Rai. Though the rescue operation is in full swing, the fate of others washed away in the flooded Beas river is still not known.

State's Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is expected to reach the mishap site in a short while to take stock of the situation. At least 24 students of the VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology in Hyderabad, including six girls, one teacher and a tour manager, were washed away by the Beas river after its water level suddenly increased, and chances of their survival are bleak.

More than 60 students and faculty members, split in two groups, were on an excursion to the picturesque tourist resort of Manali. Some of them were getting themselves photographed on the banks of the river in Thalaut area near the Hanogi Mata temple when they were reportedly washed away as the flow in the river suddenly increased without prior warning.

The Seema Suraksha Bal, which is involved in the rescue operation, has retrieved two bodies out of the Pandoh dam this morning. The missing include 24 students, one faculty member and a tour manager. Search operations for the missing people is currently underway.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has ordered a probe and suspended the erring resident engineer of the 126 MW Larji hydropower project being run by the state electricity board. A case of negligence has also been registered.

Telangana Home Minister Naini Narsimha Reddy and a police team are leaving for Himachal Pradesh after the tragedy. Reddy will be leaving for HP upon instructions from Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

"Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma and Cyberabad Police Commissioner CV Anand are in touch with top police officials of Himachal Pradesh," Assistant Commissioner of Police (Petbasheerabad Division) M Srinivasa Rao said.

"A group of 48 students studying II-nd year Electronics and Instrumentation at a city-based private engineering college were on a study tour of HP when the tragedy struck them this evening," Srinivasa Rao said. The study tour had started from June 3, he added.

Srinivasa Rao spoke to one of the students of the group and quoted him as saying that "the incident occurred as a group of around 25 students, including seven girls, were taking photographs near the river bank when there was a sudden gush of water in which they were feared to have been washed away. We are in constant touch with some other students who had gone on the trip. I have been informed that it was a 10-day tour," the ACP said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also expressed shock and anguish over the incident. Naidu is also reported to have requested the Himachal Pradesh government to expedite relief and rescue operations.

Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which include deep water divers, have reached the spot to help with rescue operations.

The NDRF teams, comprising 84 personnel, have been dispatched following a directive from Home Minister Rajnath Singh, a Home Ministry official said.

Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani is due to visit the site of tragedy in Kullu in a short while. Expressing her grave concern over the tragic incident in Himachal Pradesh, the Union HRD Minister today assured the state of all possible assistance from the Centre.

Irani assured the state Education Ministry, held by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, “of all assistance and support required from the Centre,” a statement released by the HRD ministry said.

Meanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh authorities have issued helpline numbers through which latest information related to the rescue operation and the survivors can be obtained.

Rescue workers on Monday morning recovered 5 bodies from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district.

“Have recovered 5 bodies till now, the volume of water is making operations a bit tough,” said Sanjeev, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Mandi superintendent of police R.S. Negi said that the students were swept away when water was suddenly released into the river from the Laarji Hydropower Project after 6.30 pm. According to the faculty members, who witnessed the mishap, the group was taking photographs when a huge quantity of water rushed down.
“The students were standing on the rocks on the bank when the gates of the Larji dam were opened and the water washed them away. I too fell into the water, but was pulled out by some students,” said Mr Kiran, a faculty member who was with the students.

Mandi Police officials said that the Larji dam is usually opened in the evening as one part of the river gets filled with water from melting ice. “They must have got into the river as there was no water when they reached there. A total of 18 boys and six girls were washed away in the sudden flow of water,” said Mr Negi. The students, meanwhile, said that the rescue team reached late despite the emergency services being alerted.

The SP added that rescue operation had become difficult due to darkness and rapid flow of water. “It’s almost impossible to continue the rescue mission now due to hazardous conditions in the river and the area around. We will resume the operation early morning on Monday,” he said. The excursion team had left for Himachal Pradesh on June 3. The students belonged to all batches of the Electronic and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE) department.

24 Engineering Students From Hyderabad Washed Away in Himachal Pradesh Two Bodies Recovered

The bodies of two of the 24 students, who were washed away in the Beas river near Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, have been recovered from the Pandoh dam reservoir.

The incident occurred at around 6 pm on Sunday when the students, six of them girls, were clicking pictures on the banks of the river. They were on their way from Shimla to the resort town of Manali for an excursion. A sudden release from the reservoir of the Larji dam led to a surge in the water level in the river which is feared to have swept away the students. One bus conductor is also reportedly missing.

Ravi Kumar, a college student who was part of the group and an eyewitness to the incident, said, "I tried calling out to my friends, but my voice got stuck. They also saw the water level rising, I tried helping few of them, but in a span of six seconds, the water level rose to five or six feet...in front of my eyes, they got drowned."

The missing students were part of a 46-member sightseeing group from the VNR Vignan Jyothi Engineering College.

Angry locals protested, saying authorities had failed to issue a warning about the release of water from the dam. However, the additional district magistrate has claimed that a siren went off before the dam water was released but the students may not have been able to understand what it was for.

Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force, which include deep water divers, are helping with rescue operations. The NDRF teams, comprising 84 personnel, were dispatched following a directive from Home Minister Rajnath Singh, a Home Ministry official said.

Darkness and strong river currents hampered search operations during night, but was resumed this morning at 5 am.

Meanwhile, Union Minister For Human Resource Development Smriti Irani is on the way to Mandi. "Spoke to Minister of Education Himachal Pradesh Shri Bali re the tragic incident of 24 engineering students feared washed away near Mandi (sic)," Ms Irani tweeted. "Also contacted the faculty member who was at the accident site. Was assured by Tehsildar Sadar Mandi that medical aid has been provided (sic)", she added.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock and anguish over the incident. Mr Naidu has requested the Himachal Pradesh government to expedite relief and rescue operations, official sources said.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao too expressed shock and deep anguish over the incident. He has rushed a team, headed by the Home Minister, to Himachal Pradesh to take stock of the situation.

Maddie Bradshaw M3 Girl Designs founder who is 13years age Converted into $1.6 million Brand a year

Maddie Bradshaw is the President/founder of m3 girl designs, a jewelry company, with annual revenues of around $1.6 million, selling over 60,000 necklaces per month in over 6,000 U.S. retail outlets, including Amazon.com and Nordstrom.

Everything started when the young girl was 10 years-old and wanted to decorated her school locker, but couldn’t find anything interesting and original. When her uncle, who had an old Coke machine, gave her 50 bottle caps, she decided to decorate them herself and put magnets on them. The now 16-year-old recalls: “When my friends saw the caps, they wanted me to make some for them.”

Their enthusiasm determined Maddie to try something new: design necklaces with a metal pendant to attract the bottle cap, which she called Snap Caps. The Snap Caps aim to capture and celebrate every girl’s unique personality, with themes ranging from initials, music stars and fairy tales. Bradshaw took 50 of the necklaces to a local toy store. In less than two hours, they sold out. The young entrepreneur remembers: “At that point, I knew I was onto something. I think we were successful in the beginning because I was more focused on having fun and less worried about failing.” While she only spent $300 of her own money, matched by her mother, to buy supplies, the young girl already made her first million by age 13.

                                                              M3 Girl Designs

Maddie, alongside her younger sister, Margot, who is the company’s vice-president, creates the jewelry designs. She also attends all the company’s meetings and trade shows. The young entrepreneur has recently added a new line of necklaces, called Spark of Life, which targets an older group, teens. She revealed: ”The great thing about our company is that it’s growing with me.As my tastes change, so will the products.”

"A kid knows what a kid likes," says Bradshaw, who took her bottle cap idea, which she named Snap Caps, and pitched it to a local toy store, Learning Express, in 2007. Selling out of the 50 bottle caps Bradshaw and her mom took to the store  in under two hours Learning Express quickly asked the then-10-year-old if it could carry the Snap Caps in more of its stores throughout Texas.

Now, Bradshaw's designs can be found in hundreds of stores throughout the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas. Snap Caps can be worn on necklaces, in hairpins, or as bracelets. "All my designs are interchangeable," says Bradshaw, whose company now sells 50,000 necklaces and caps every month.

As the founder, president, and head designer of the Dallas-based company, Bradshaw is still a full-time student and plays lacrosse, tennis, and is a member of the swim team. Her 9-year-old sister Margot helps design and paint some of the bottle caps, and is most often the person Bradshaw turns to for advice.

"She always knows what the latest trends are, what my friends and hers are going to like," Bradshaw says. Margot also serves as the company's vice president, while mother Diane is CEO and the person who is responsible for all the financials. "Maddie definitely attends the business meetings, talks about the designs, and goes to trade shows," Diane Bradshaw says.

Maddie's accidental product has become something of a tween-selling powerhouse -- Snap Caps were featured at the Teen Choice Awards and now bring in $1.6 million in revenue. Throughout this summer, Bradshaw has worked with the company's 25 employees, designing more caps and expanding into hair ties and notebooks. "I'm glad I started this company as a kid," Bradshaw says. "I've learned how to market a business  and I think it's really fun."

Bradsaw has also published a book, called You Can Start a Business, Too, after receiving numerous emails from young girls who also wanted to start a business. At the same time, she is striving to create a scholarship to help aspiring young entrepreneurs, as she confessed: ”I love that I have an opportunity to reach out and help others. Not everybody has the money like I did to pay for start-up costs.”

Bradshaw’s initiative has attracted local and national media attention. The young entrepreneur appeared on ABC’s“The View” and the “Shark Tank,” while her work has been featured on the Teen Choice Awards. Regarding her appearance on “The View,” Bradshaw confessed: “I was so nervous about answering questions from Barbara Walters.” She added: “But with each new opportunity to talk about the company in front of people, I gained a bit more confidence and learned that I could do more than I thought I could do.”

While on “Shark Tank” in February 2012, Bradshaw asked the “Sharks,” five investors who listen to business pitches and offer financial and mentoring deals with entrepreneurs, to invest $300,000 in her company, while proposing a 15% stake in the company. M3 girl designs ended up offering 30% equity in the business for the $300k, but obtained considerable value for the additional 15%. Instead of one “Shark” offering to launch her company internationally and mentor her, three investors, Mark Cuban, Robert Herjevic and the QVC Queen Lori Greiner, together worth billions of dollars, accepted to invest in the young girl’s business.

While her own company continues to rise to unexpected heights, Maddie’s Bradshaw advises other young entrepreneurs to: “Follow your passion. If you come up with an idea and you love it, chances are other people will, too.”
This is a True Success Story that is sure to keep growing as the two girls continue to develop their Brand. This is also a very good lesson for all parents in how to encourage their kids that they can accomplish anything they want in life if they are willing to work hard (and smart) for it.
Maddie and Margot may be getting a lot of the attention, but without grounded parent's that were willing to help take a business idea into a multi-million dollar business in a few short years cannot be over looked.

N Chandrababu Naidu swearing- in ceremony LIVE

The twin cities of Vijayawada and Guntur have virtually turned yellow with yellow TDP flags fluttering on all the roads and along the 35-km stretch between Vijayawada and Guntur.

Telugu Desam Party leader N. Chandrababu Naidu is set to take oath as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening in a public ceremony on the grounds opposite Acharya Nagarjuna University between Vijayawada and Guntur.

The site for the swearing-in is significant as it is widely expected that the new State capital will come up between the two cities, though no official announcement has been made yet.

Chandrababu Naidu has also indicated that a camp office may be set up on the premises of Acharya Nagarjuna University, located roughly midway between Guntur and Vijayawada.

Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the two would be developed as twin cities, indicating that the Capital would come up between the two.

He also said at Vijayawada that the Polavaram project, so critical to the development of Seemandhra, would in no way harm Telangana and therefore the merger of a few villages facing submersion in Seemandhra should not be politicised and made a big issue.

The Opposition YSR Congress has criticised the TDP for "converting the swearing-in ceremony, an official function, into a party function to boost the image of Chandrababu Naidu." The party spokesman alleged that Rs 30 crore of public money was being spent on the ceremony at a time when the new State was facing a deficit of Rs 15,000 crore. The party questioned the propriety of conducting the official function in such a manner. In protest, YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy decided to stay away from it, though he was invited.

Sumitra Mahajan Elected as Speaker of Lok Sabha

Sumitra Mahajan Elected as Speaker of Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha elected Sumitra Mahajan, a veteran ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as speaker on Friday, clearing a key hurdle before the government unveils its policy programme next week.

Mahajan, 71, an eight-term member of the house from Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was unanimously elected as speaker of the 545-member Lok Sabha, or House of the People.

Modi won the first outright parliamentary majority in 30 years in last month's election, creating expectations that the new legislature will do a better job after a previous term marked by legislative drift and chaotic debates.

Although the BJP and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance control a big majority, with a combined count of 336 seats, Modi will need to cobble together alliances to pass some measures through the Rajya Sabha.President Pranab Mukherjee is due to present the government's agenda next week, with parliament reconvening in July to consider Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's first budget.

Ms Mahajan is the first BJP leader to be elected the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and leaders of other parties too made short speeches congratulating the new Speaker.

Sumitra Mahajan, is the longest serving woman lawmaker in the Lok Sabha. She was elected last month for an eighth consecutive term from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, defeating her Congress rival by a huge margin of 4.66 lakh votes.

Mr Modi said while greeting the Speaker today, "In your name it is inherent you will have friendly and cordial relations with everyone," adding "it is good to walk on the path taken by Mahajans and we have a Mahajan sitting here." Sumitra means "a good friend".

Soon after election results were declared, senior BJP leader LK Advani had reportedly pitched for the Speaker's post. But it was clear soon enough that the party leadership favoured appointing Ms Mahajan.

Speaker of the Lok Sabha Role:

The Speaker of the Lok Sabha is the presiding officer of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India. His/her role is similar to that of Speakers elsewhere in other countries that use the Westminster system of government.

The speaker is elected in the very first meeting of the Lok Sabha following general elections. Serving for a term of 5 years, he/she is chosen from amongst the members of the Lok Sabha, and is by convention a member of the ruling party or alliance.
