Message by United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women

Today we join the people of the world in celebration of the progress made for women's rights, women's empowerment and gender equality. We also acknowledge that progress has been slow, uneven and in some cases women and girls face new and more complex challenges.
International Women's Day is therefore also a day to recommit ourselves to working harder for gender equality, together as women, men, youth and leaders of nations, communities, religion and commerce.
If we act decisively, with the knowledge that empowering women and girls and supporting their full participation can help solve the greatest challenges of the 21st century, we will find lasting solutions to many of the problems we face in our world. Major challenges such as poverty, inequality, violence against women and girls, and insecurity will be addressed substantially.
Women spend the majority of their income on the well-being of their children and family. Raising women's labour force participation increases economic growth. By ending women's poverty, we will sustainably and significantly reduce extreme poverty worldwide.

 By keeping girls in school longer, with quality education we will empower young women to play their full role in society and build stronger families, communities and democracies.
By advancing equal opportunity and removing structural barriers to women's economic empowerment, we will reduce inequality and spur inclusive economic growth.

By supporting women's equal representation in leadership positions in peacemaking, in communities, in politics, in business and in religious institutions, we will build a more just, peaceful and secure world.
By working with men and boys, and doing it together, we will engage humanity in a task that is a responsibility for all.
As we celebrate International Women's Day, we remember and celebrate the women who, led by women in trade unions on this day more than a century ago, called for better working conditions, peace and bread. Their call is still valid today.
Given slow and uneven progress, we continue to call for change. And we pay tribute to the countless women around the world who are making change every day as they go about their daily lives.
Nearly 20 years after the Beijing Women's Conference, and 15 years after the Millennium Summit, we look back with pride at the achievements that have been made. More women are working. More girls are in school. Fewer women die in pregnancy and childbirth. And more women are in leadership positions.
But no country in the world has achieved equality between women and men and girls and boys, and violations of the rights of women and girls are an outrage. So let us build on the lessons learned and the knowledge that equality for women is progress for all, and make greater and bolder progress as we work to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and chart a new post-2015 development agenda.
We can no longer afford to hold back half the world's population. The 21st century has to be different for every woman and girl in the world. She must know that to be born a girl is not the start of a life of hardship and disadvantage. Together we must make sure that:
SHE is Safe and Secure from gender-based violence.
SHE has Human rights that are respected, including reproductive rights.
SHE is Empowered economically and in every way through Education, Equal opportunity, participation and leadership.
This is the SHE Imperative to which I call on you to commit.
Let us all cross the line and stand on the right side of history.
Today and every day, UN Women will stand strong for women's rights, women's empowerment and gender equality.

250 gms yam, peeled, washed and sliced.
1 tsp red chili powder
½ tsp turmeric powder
2 tbsp lemon juice
oil for frying
coriander leaves
lemon wedges


In a bowl mix the yam with the rest of the spice powder, lemon juice and salt.Marinate the yam slices for 20-30 minutes.shallow fry the yam slices in oil on a flat pan or tava or bake in oven.Drain on kitchen tissues and garnished with coriander leaves and lemon wedges.

 1/2 Kg Boiled Prawns
1/4 cup ginger garlic paste
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 and half cup of oil
1/2 cup red chilli powder
1 tea spoon turmeric 
1/2 cup salt


Clean and wash prawns well. Add a tbsp of turmeric pwd and a tbsp of salt.Mix well and put it in a pan. Cook in a medium flame until the water in the prawns is completely dried. (by this time the prawns will be half cooked.)Heat oil in a pan. Deep fry the cooked prawns in oil until golden color. (Remember the prawns should be soft but not crispy). Remove and take them into a bowl.And let them cool.To the same oil add ginger garlic paste. Fry until raw smell of the ginger garlic paste and starts leaving oil. Switch off the flame and let it cool. Now to it add the fried prawns, red chilli powder, lemon juice and the remaining salt. Mix well and store it in a air tight container.

500 gm  Boneless mutton( cut in to small pieces)
Ginger and Garlic paste 2tbsp
Turmeric powder 1tsp
Coriander powder 4tsp
Black pepper powder 1tsp
Red chili powder 2tsp
Fennel seeds 1and half tsp
Onion seeds 1tsp
Methi seeds 1tsp
Cumin seeds 1tsp
Onion paste of 2 medium sized onions
Cloves 6-7
Cinnamon stick 2-3
Star Anise 1
Whole dry red chilli 3-4nos
Hing ¼ tsp
White Vinegar or lemon juice – 1 ¼ cup
Salt to taste
Mustard Oil 1 and1/2cup


Heat mustard oil in a heavy bottom pan and bring it to smoking point  simmer the heat and let it cool down a bit before adding ingredients Add ginger garlic paste and fry for a couple of minutes now add onion paste and cook till it is golden brown. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, black pepper powder, coriander powder, Kalonji, Methi seeds, cumin seeds and fennel seeds. Fry well. Then add mutton pieces fry till brown. Now add little water and salt to taste. Simmer and cook the meat till just underdone but make sure water is evaporated completely (Keep sprinkling water in between if required for the meat to be cooked) Heat some oil in a pan and add whole red chilli, hing, and roasted powder (made of star anise, clove and cinnamon). Fry for a minute and add this to the meat, mix well for a couple of minutes.Then add vinegar and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Check for seasoning and take off the heat and let it cool completely. store in dry jar.

1 tbsp Cumin seeds
1/2 cup Red chili powder
1/3 cup Salt


Separate the garlic pods and remove the extra outer layers of garlic,you can keep one layer or you can even remove that completely or you can either remove the layers completely for half the pods and retain for the other half.Grind red chili powder,cumin seeds and salt to a powder.Add garlic pods and grind again to a coarse powder.Store it in air tight container.
  • Sprinkle this garlic powder when you make vegetable stir fries like Ladies finger, Brinjal, Tindora(Ivy gourd), Bitter gourd, Cluster beans , Carrot, Beetroot, French Beans, Cauliflower, Potato fry, Arbi fry etc.You need to saute the vegetables until done and add the spicy garlic powder as per your taste at the end.
  • You can roast the whole slit vegetables like Brinjals,Bitter gourd until they are completely done and stuff them at the end with this spicy garlic podi.You should make this just before serving,it tastes nice.
  • This garlic podi is a multi purpose powder,you can spice up your dals, regular dry curries, parathas with it.
