'Bahu dilao, vote pao' in Haryana

The "bahu dilao-vote pao" slogan came from the Kunwara Union, set up in Jind in 2009 by Pawan Kumar, now its chairman. "The government must not only attack female foeticide but also find jobs for young men in Haryana. Unemployment is also a factor for us not getting brides," he said. The union had even organized a protest march five years ago to demand brides. Can an unmarried man demand a bride from a candidate ahead of Lok Sabha elections? You can in Haryana, a state with the lowest sex ratio in the country - 877 women per 1,000 men.


An abnormally large number of unmarried men in Haryana has even led to the creation of informal "randa unions". Their slogan is "Bahu dilao-vote pao" (Get us a bride-get our vote) ahead of elections.

The gender imbalance caused by female foeticide has become so acute that members of these unions and elders in many villages say they will raise the issue when politicians arrive for poll meetings. "The villagers will raise this issue, though in a lighter vein," said Sunil Jaglan, sarpanch of Bibipur village in Jind.
 
According to Shyam Sunder, secretary of the Red Cross Society of Yamunanagar, each of the 7,000-odd villages in Haryana has 150 to 200 youths who are 25-plus and unmarried. Twenty is considered the ideal age for marriage in rural Haryana.

Pune-based NGO Drishti Stree Adhyayan Prabodhan Kendra, which surveyed 56,520 residents in 92 villages of Haryana in 2010, had found that 13.5% men in the age group of 25-29 were unmarried.

Describing Sunrisers Hyderabad as a balanced side, the team’s chief coach Tom Moody and mentor Kris Srikkanth exuded confidence of a successful campaign in the upcoming Indian Premier League starting April 16 in Abu Dhabi.

“Obviously, we had a good campaign last year, given that it was our first IPL as Sunrisers Hyderabad. This year we feel confident again. We feel we have got a very good balance in our side that allows us to adapt,” Moody told reporters.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had reached the play-offs last year.Srikkanth said the “core team” has been retained this year and that would ensure continuity.

“As far as we are concerned, I think the team is well-prepared. One thing, I just want to add on to what Tom said regarding the team aspect is, we got the core team with us. “We have got Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma is right here, Karn Sharma is here. He was a member of last year’s team. We have of course Amit Mishra, Darren Sammy and Dale Steyn. The most important thing is we were able to manage somehow to get almost the core team. Last year, we gelled well together and did well. I think that’s a very important aspect,” he said

Noting that all the IPL teams comprised good and talented players, Srikkanth felt that the competition this year will be evenly poised.

“Every team has planned it very well. One good thing about this IPL is, it is going to be an evenly-balanced tournament. Last couple of years, there were sides, which are at least on paper rated very weak. This time, all the eight teams have got good players. It is going to be a good
tournament. It is going to be very well fought tournament,” he said.

Controversies

Initially it became famous for broadcasting soft porn, mms clips and other adult related videos for increase in TRP ratings.But when in February 2011, TV9 Telugu conducted what was described as a "sting operation" on the "gay culture" in the Hyderabad city. The gay community, which described the programme as discriminatory and presenting an unduly negative impression, later carried out protests outside both the Mumbai and Hyderabad offices of TV9
Harish Iyer, a Mumbai-based gay activist said "What was the sting operation for since it is absolutely legal for two consenting adults to have sex in their private space according to section 377 amendment. They had not got consent from the people whose pictures were broadcast on the channel, which is the basic ethic of journalism."
Gay rights activist Aditya Bandopadhyay accused the producers, in an open letter to the channel, of "hunting down" gay people for the amusement of viewers. Bandopadhyay states that it was a "clear case of entrapment". In his letter, he asks for a public apology and warns that legal action may be an option.
Also in 2011, film maker Ram Gopal Varma sent complaints to TV9 regarding a telecast of what he described as a "defamatory" show about him. In a statement, Varma said:

With regard to an extremely derogatory programme done by TV9 on me titled "Ram Dhamaal Varma" where they have attributed many false quotes to me, of which one example is "prekshakulu verri vedhavalu", I am hereby informing that I am initiating criminal action against TV9 for defamation with a criminal intent.

Supreme Court stays order on Delhi nursery admissions

Nursery admissions were put on hold again in Delhi schools with the Supreme Court on Friday staying last week’s Delhi High Court order allowing its resumption, bringing another spell of uncertainty and worries to hundreds of parents.

A bench of justices H.L. Dattu and S.A. Bobde put a halt on the operation of the High Court’s interim order directing that those children who applied and were selected in draw of lots for neighbourhood and other categories, be admitted.

The apex court passed the order on the appeal filed by those parents who had come to the national capital from other places of the country and had sought admission under the inter-state transfer (IST) category which was deleted during the admission process by the Delhi government owing to its abuse on a large scale.

Senior advocate Nidhesh Gupta, appearing for the IST category parents, explained that as a result of the Delhi government decision, his clients had to vacate the seats allotted to them after they were successful in draw of lots held as per earlier guidelines for admission.

The high court, however, had not passed an order regarding the fate of the seats vacated by the IST category and had deferred the issue till April 16, the next date of hearing.

Challenging the High Court order, Mr. Gupta contended that though their issue is yet to be decided, their fate has been “virtually sealed” as seats that had been vacated by them will now be allotted to other 75 pointers - those falling in alumni category.

Earlier, those in IST category also had 75 points. Mr. Gupta argued that the High Court’s order was in violation of the basic principles of equality as enunciated under Article 14 of the Constitution, as all the neighbourhood category kids (having 70 points) will be admitted as per their selection in earlier draws, while the admission of IST group, also relegated to 70 points, is yet to be decided.

“The result of the impugned order (of April 3) is that the petitioners will not even be considered for approximately 60 per cent seats taken by the 70 pointers pursuant to the December 18, 2013 notification,” Mr. Gupta said.

KCR to do a Modi with 3-D tech

 Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrashekar Rao is all set to do a Narendra Modi in Telangana. In what is being billed as a hi-tech electoral campaign borrowed from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), KCR is planning to reach out to the masses through the 3-D hologram technology that was popularised by the Gujarat chief minister during the 2012 Assembly elections by which he could address the voters at multiple locations at the same time.
 Interestingly, the same Hyderabad-based company that had supplied the cutting-edge technology to Modi has been roped in by KCR. Sources said the back-end work has been completed and the TRS chief's 3-D hologram campaign would be launched on Saturday. "We are planning two big events for the poll campaign. One is the launch of the virtual campaign using 3-D hologram technology slated for April 12 and the second is a public meeting scheduled for April 13 in Karimnagar where KCR would address a gathering of over a lakh people," Subhash Reddy, political secretary to KCR, told TOI.

 Modi used this technology for the first time for election meetings in 2012, addressing voters across 53 locations in Gujarat simultaneously. Modi wanted to use this technology in Hyderabad when he addressed his first public rally in south India on August 11 last year, after he was made the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. The party had planned to organize 3-D projection of his address at the L B Stadium at 25 places across the city, but it was shelved after the police denied permission because of the ongoing APNGO strike against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad-based NChant is the technology supplier to Modi and film maker Mani Shankar is the man behind it. TRS sources said the party too has hired the services of NChant but Mani Shankar declined to comment whether he is also part of the KCR campaign.

Subhash Reddy said special vehicles have been hired for the 3-D hologram projection of KCR's pre-recorded speeches. The projections would be organised at 42 places across Telangana on a given day and plans are afoot to cover 700 places by April 28 when the campaign comes to an end

Infosys begins hunt for new CEO, MD

Indian IT bellwether Infosys is on the lookout for a new chief executive to succeed the incumbent and co-founder S.D. Shibulal, who wants to quit soon.

"The nominations committee of the board of directors has begun the search to select a successor to Shibulal, who expressed his desire to retire as the chief executive and managing director on the date of last board meeting or before his superannuation Jan 9, 2015," the company said in a statement here.

The board of directors is scheduled to meet April 15 to approve the company's accounts for fiscal 2013-14 at its corporate headquarters in this tech hub.

"The committee will shortlist and evaluate an internal slate of candidates with the assistance of Development Dimensions International, a company specialising in corporate executive evaluations," the statement said.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who was recently in Dubai to promote his new film "Bhoothnath Returns", was given a gift by a fan of his granddaughter Aaradhya. He has been asked to give it to the "right person".

The 71-year-old used his official blog srbachchan.tumblr.com to post a few photographs of a little girl dressed in pink with a gift in her hands.

Amitabh Bachchan said:" This little beauty, who walked through the crowd to give a gift she had wrapped herself for Aaradhya insisting that she open it to show me what it was, explaining the contents, putting it back the way it was wrapped and making sure I would give it to the right person.

Family's presence best b'day gift for Jaya Bachchan

Actor Jaya Bachchan, who has turned 66, spent her birthday with her children and grandchildren. She says she couldn't have hoped for a "better gift".

Her husband megastar Amitabh Bachchan was away in Dubai for the promotion of his forthcoming release "Bhoothnath Returns", but Jaya's day was made special by her other family members Wednesday.

"All my loved ones are with me. I couldn't have hoped for a better gift," said the ecstatic Jaya.

Jaya's frail old mother couldn't be flown into Mumbai from Bhopal, daughter Shweta flew in with her two children Navya Naveli and Agastya. Son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya too cancelled all their appointments to just spend the day with her.

Amitabh Bachchan Bhoothnath sequel Bhoothnath Returns releasing today

Child actor Parth Bhalerao has outshined megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the newly released horror comedy film "Bhoothnath Returns", according to critics.

"Bhoothnath Returns" directed by Nitesh Tiwari is a sequel to 2008 film "Bhoothnath". It features Big B and Bhalerao in lead roles and Boman Irani in supporting role. Anurag Kashyap, Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor have done cameo in the film. Bhalerao has impressed critics with his acting skills and comic timing with Sr. Bachchan.
In Bhoothnath Returns, the ghost Amitabh Bachchan takes up the challenge to contest elections against a corrupt politician played by Boman Irani, with the hepl of a kid. The film aims to send across a serious message through laughter.

The breezy first half will keep you in splits where Akrod and Bhoothnath warm up to each other and develop a special bond. Tiwari uses the natural pace and progression of the film without any hysteria and melodrama. His precise direction and engaging narrative complement the screenplay that’s peppered with fine turn of events. The dialogues are catchy, witty and relentlessly hilarious.

'No one will marry me after watching 'Revolver Rani'': Kangana Ranaut

"Nobody is going to marry me after watching this film... I can give it to you in writing," Kangna told reporters during the press conference for the film.

The actress, whose recent performance in "Queen", says she wanted four months gap between the release of "Queen" and "Revolver Rani".

Actress Kangana Ranaut says her sister advised her not to do ‘Revolver Rani’, in which she will be seen in a completely new avatar. 

“When I went for narration of this film, my sister had come with me. She advised me not to do the film as the character was crazy, twisted, aggressive, abusive… The character seemed difficult, impossible to create on screen. But I took it up,” Kangana Ranaut told reporters here at a promotional event of ‘Revolver Rani’.

In the trailer of the film, Kangana has expressed her desire to get married near the Taj Mahal.

When asked about her wish of tying the knot in real life, she said, “After watching ‘Revolver Rani’ no one would want to marry me.”
Complete with pulp comedy, blazing guns and an unusual love story at the heart of it, the movie features Kangana, Vir Das among others. After an overwhelming response to 'Queen', this film is special to me, the hopes are high. It is an unusual film right from its concept, story, treatment etc, Kangana said.

The actress, who shot for the film in Chambal, says she was not aware about the crime happening in the area even now. If I was aware that there are people on whom two-three murder cases are there, people have guns.I would not have done it. I wouldn't have taken the risk to go there, she said.

Kangana revealed that while they were returning to Gwalior with film's director Sai Kabir and the crew in a convoy of about four-five cars and a police van, they were stopped by 12-15 men armed with guns and knives.
